Unfortunately, the moderately difficult tour to the abbey leads through absolute no man's land. You have to walk across fields and forests. Better to approach from the street (tour backwards).

The temple on Monte Sacro was, in the 4th century AD, consecrated to the pagan cult of Jupiter. It is said that, after the appearance of the Archangel Michael in the cave of Monte Sant'Angelo, the statues dedicated to Jupiter were destroyed by the religious of the area and the temple was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. 6th to 13th century AD the Abbey was the seat of the Benedictine Convent and with its vast library it became one of the most important cultural centers of medieval Puglia.
