In 2011, the pilgrimage site of Monte Sant'Angelo was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the seven components of the Lombard site in Italy, Places of Power (568 to 774 AD). The historic site and its surroundings are also protected by the Gargano National Park. The sights are well described in the following link: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Sant%E2%80%99Angelo

In April 2023 I went on a guided orchid excursion in the Gargano National Park, including around the Sacro Monte. At this time of year it is a very productive and interesting terrain for orchid lovers.

Wonderful pleasure descent to Mattinata. Good road surface. Not too steep, so it's great to drive uphill too.

The Gargano region generally offers pleasant cycling conditions outside of the peak summer heat. Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) are often ideal, with milder temperatures and less tourist traffic, making for a more enjoyable experience on the roads.
While the routes in this guide are rated moderate to difficult due to elevation gains, Mattinata's flat olive groves offer potential for easier, more family-friendly rides. For dedicated no-traffic road cycling, the shorter moderate loops might be suitable for families with older, experienced children, but always check the route details for distance and elevation before setting out.
Mattinata, as a town, offers various parking options. For routes starting directly from the town, you can typically find street parking or designated parking areas. For routes that begin slightly outside, such as the View of the Sant'Angelo Climb – Monte Sant'Angelo Castle loop from Agnuli, Mattinata villa romana, look for parking near the specified starting points or local villages.
Many of the routes pass through or near towns and villages like Mattinata itself or Monte Sant'Angelo, where you'll find cafes, restaurants, and shops to refuel. The region is known for its hospitality, so opportunities for a coffee or a meal are generally available, especially in the more populated areas along the routes.
These routes are carefully selected or designed to utilize quieter secondary roads, less-trafficked coastal stretches, or specific times of day when vehicle presence is minimal. While 'no traffic' doesn't always mean entirely car-free, it signifies a significantly reduced volume of vehicles compared to main thoroughfares, enhancing safety and enjoyment for cyclists.
