This year, our Transalpine tour took us through the impressive Sarca Valley, a stage that is etched in my memory. The landscape there was not only spectacular, but also of breathtaking beauty, unparalleled.

The via ferrata is entirely inside a narrow gorge where the Salagoni river flows impetuously; therefore it is constantly in the shade. It is a via ferrata that I would rate between 'Easy' and 'Moderately Difficult'. Technically easy (apart from two sections of a few metres overhanging) and with a short approach. The attention to be paid is in any case to the ever-present humidity and the sometimes great distance of the numerous stirrups. It is almost never climbable since a good part winds vertically on the walls of the gorge; and therefore stirrups for the feet and a cable for the hands are used. One last attention to be paid is in following the metal equipment because you can be deceived and end up in slippery sections.

Great on hot days! But be careful in heavy rain: the narrow stream can swell into an apocalyptic river! ⚠️‼️

Historically beautiful old narrow, steadily ascending road that has been closed to traffic and is now used by hikers and mountain bikers alike. It's usually very busy, so take care of each other. Lots of great views of Lake Garda and the surrounding area along the route. Coarse gravel surface in the lower area, asphalt in the upper area. Halfway there is a place to stop for refreshments. A VISIT IS WORTH👍👍👍!!!

Incredibly beautiful flat bike path, separated from the road. Go through the entire canyon on the mountain with beautiful views of the gorge.

The most popular experiences revolve around the dramatic Limarò Gorge Cycle Path, which offers spectacular insights into the canyon carved by the Sarca River. Another highly appreciated route is the Sarca Valley Cycle Path, known for its incredibly beautiful, flat terrain and views of the gorge.
Yes, several options are suitable for families. The Limarò Gorge Cycle Path is considered family-friendly, offering tremendous insights into the canyon from a former road connection. The Sarca Valley Cycle Path is also a great choice for families due to its flat and scenic route. Additionally, the Waterfall and Grotto at Parco Grotta Cascata Varone is a natural monument with accessible walkways and lighting, making it an engaging visit for all ages.
You'll encounter dramatic scenery with deep, narrow gorges and imposing vertical rock walls, sculpted over centuries by the Sarca River. The landscape features natural sculptures, varying rock colors from ammonitic red to light gray, and unique formations like niches, cavities, and 'giant's kettles' (marmitte dei giganti). Panoramic terraces and bridges offer stunning views into the depths of the canyons.
While the specific best time can depend on your activity, generally, spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for exploring the canyons and cycle paths. Summer is also popular, but some areas like the Waterfall and Grotto at Parco Grotta Cascata Varone might experience crowding.
Historically, the Limarò pass served as an important connection between the Giudicarie and Sarca valleys, with ancient routes traversing the area. You can find traces of past human activity, such as an old lime kiln, testifying to stone working. While not directly in the canyon, the nearby Tenno Castle, built in the 12th century, offers a glimpse into the region's history, though it is a private residence.
The area around Comano Terme is excellent for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy cycling on routes like the Ballino Pass – Tenno Castle loop or the Sarca Gorge Cycle Path loop. Gravel biking is also popular, with routes such as the Km0 UNESCO Comano Gravel Experience. For runners, there are trails like the Val Lomasona Cycle Path loop or the Sarca River Gorge loop.
Yes, visitors can explore the Canyon del Limarò via walking paths that follow the course of the Sarca River. These trails are designed to immerse you in the suggestive scenery and offer access to panoramic terraces and bridges, including a modern suspension bridge and the older stone Balandin bridge.
Visitors highly appreciate the spectacular views and the unique experience of cycling or walking along paths that were once old state roads, now transformed into scenic routes. The 'tremendous insights into the gorge' and the 'incredibly beautiful' nature of the cycle paths are frequently praised, along with the relatively low crowds on some routes.
Exploring the Canyon del Limarò itself, including its walking paths, is generally free of charge. However, specific attractions like the Waterfall and Grotto at Parco Grotta Cascata Varone are located within a private natural park and require an entrance fee.
Some trails and areas around Comano Terme are dog-friendly. For example, Tenno Castle, while not directly a canyon, is in a dog-friendly area. It's always recommended to check specific trail regulations or highlight details for the most up-to-date information on dog accessibility.
