The Berliner Turm is a listed tower of the historical city fortifications of the town of Burg. It stands on the north side of Berliner Straße, east of Burg's town center, was built in the 14th century from fieldstones and belonged as a gate tower to the Berliner Tor. The gate, also known as Liebfrauentor, was demolished in 1806, but the round tower was preserved. In the middle of its height, it has two layers of brick. The Hexenturm was built in the 11th century in Burg, and it is assumed that it was initially square and only received its round shape towards the end of the 15th century. During this time, the tower was used as a prison for the alleged witches, which is where its name comes from. The tower contains a six-meter-deep dungeon. The prisoners could be lowered there through a round opening in the floor. The Hexenturm retained its function as a women's prison until 1846. In that year, a new courthouse with a prison was built in Burger Hainstraße. The tower was to be demolished several times in the following period, as there was no longer any use for it. The rectangular tower was built around 1300. The round tower and central section were built around 1450 and flank a pointed-arch passageway. The round tower features a projecting battlement. The more elaborate design of the round tower, the central section, and the top of the rectangular structure corresponds to the construction period around 1450 and was probably initiated by Stephan Buxtehude, to whom the Uenglinger Gate in Stendal and the Elbe Gate in Werben are attributed. The round tower is decorated with glazed bricks arranged in spiral or zigzag patterns, a molded stone frieze depicting the head of Medusa, and varied blind decorations.
