If you cycle along the hills of Torino di Sangro, in the Vedetta area there is a spot where it is mandatory to get off the saddle, be silent and look around. Right next to the British War Cemetery (Sangro River War Cemetery), a spectacular panoramic view opens up over the entire Val di Sangro. Today this landscape appears peaceful and lush, but in the winter of 1943 it was the dramatic theatre of the fighting on the Gustav Line, the fortified defensive line where Allied forces and partisans fought hard to repel the German occupation. From this natural "lookout" the gaze sweeps across the whole valley, making evident the strategic importance this place had. But the greatest emotion is felt when turning towards the war cemetery: a memorable and sacred place, which holds the graves of over 2,500 soldiers, mostly very young boys from all over the Commonwealth, who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.✨ Tip for cyclists: The climb to get here requires a bit of effort from the beaches of the Costa dei Trabocchi, but the combination of the beauty of the panorama and the historical depth of the place repays every pedal stroke. Stop, dedicate a thought to those who fell here and enjoy this piece of Abruzzo history. Respect & Memory 🙏
