Peenemünde Loading Ramp Remains

Highlight • Historical Site

For the so-called experimental series plant in Peenemünde, a material storage hall with a floor area of 180 m x 95 m and a height of 18 m was originally to be built. It was designed by the Schlempp construction group, but was never fully built due to the shortage of materials. Only the floor slab and the rail connection were completed. The huge hall was intended to store materials that were needed for the series production of the A4 rocket.
After the first air raid on Peenemünde in August 1943 and the subsequent relocation of series production to the underground Mittelbau-Dora production facility near Nordhausen, further expansion of the material storage hall was also stopped. However, the facility was used in its unfinished state as a construction yard, from which the construction sites of the Peenemünde experimental institutes were supplied with the necessary building materials. Today, the floor slab of the building is still clearly visible on the site, as is the hall's rail connection, the loading ramp and the staircase.
The original plan presented by the Dywidag company in October 1939 included no fewer than three production halls of enormous dimensions for Peenemünde, as well as a large repair workshop and three large acceptance test stands. Within the Army Research Institute, the test series plant represents the most monumental area in terms of construction.
The construction was undertaken by the Dywidag company, which had already built the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg and had previously worked for the Army Ordnance Office - including in Kummersdorf. Hall F1 was completed in May 1943, and on June 17, 1943, the first concentration camp prisoners arrived at the site. They were housed in the basement of the hall. In July 1943, the serial production of the A4 rocket began using the prisoners mentioned above, until the bombing raid on August 17/18, 1943 initially brought work to an end. The results of the development of the A4 rocket were brought together in the F1 production hall in particular. After the first rockets had been manufactured almost by hand, the foundations for series production were developed here and the conditions for other plants and production, for example in Mittelbau-Dora, were created.

The route is peppered with old relics from the National Socialist era. Above all old buildings - recaptured by nature - which are connected with the experiments around the V2 rocket. The "Peenemünde Monument Landscape" app, provided by the Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum, is particularly attractive.

The Hotel Uedom Bike in Karlshagen offers a wonderful place to stay right near the beach. You can go on many bike tours from here. The breakfast, the service of the always friendly staff and the unique location by the sea really impressed me. There is also a restaurant Max in the hotel, which is open from 5 p.m. The very lovingly prepared food with fish specialties, regional meat specialties and a lovingly put together wine list are very convincing.
