We hoped that we could find a public park in Madison Lake with a shaded picnic table but the only public park we could find in Madison Lake was a small children's playground with two benches and no shade. So we settled for the Anchor Bar and Grill, located right on the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail, which for the price of a beer, provided shaded seating.

Nice place to stop right along the trail. Good walleye sandwich, nice outside seating.

Nothing much to do here, but it is cute and has some former business buildings that people are using to display stuff.

Looks like a fun place to go paddle boarding and kayaking in what I'm guessing is an old quarry.

This guide features two dedicated moderate-difficulty road cycling routes that prioritize a traffic-free experience. These routes leverage the park's excellent connections to regional trail systems.
The routes primarily utilize paved bicycle trails that connect to the broader regional trail system, such as the Red Jacket Trail and Minnesota River Trail. While the park itself has limited paved trails, these provide direct access to longer, scenic routes. You can expect varied landscapes including oak savannas, native prairie grasslands, and forested areas, with some segments featuring elevation changes.
Yes, Minneopa State Park is home to the stunning Minneopa Falls, a two-tiered waterfall. While the main cycling routes might not pass directly by the falls, they are easily accessible within the park. Additionally, you can find scenic overlooks like the Overlook on the Minnesota River Bluff Trail and the South Overlook at Williams Nature Center, offering beautiful views of the Minnesota River Valley.
A notable historical landmark within the park is the Seppmann Mill. This historic, wind-driven grist mill, built in a traditional German style, offers a unique glimpse into the region's past and is a worthwhile stop during your visit.
Absolutely. The park's paved trails connect to an extensive regional system. For a significant ride, consider the Elysian trail access point – View of Lake Elysian loop from Mankato, which covers nearly 95 kilometers and offers a moderate challenge with over 300 meters of elevation gain.
Spring and fall generally offer the most pleasant conditions for road cycling in Minneopa State Park, with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can also be enjoyable, though it's advisable to ride earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Winter cycling is possible for those equipped for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, but the paved trails may be covered.
Minneopa State Park is home to the Minnesota Bison Conservation Herd within a 331-acre prairie enclosure. While the cycling routes themselves might not go directly through the bison drive, you can often observe these majestic animals from designated viewing areas or by taking the 'Bison Drive' in your vehicle on select days. The park's diverse ecosystems also support other wildlife like deer and offer excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Yes, there are several loop options that connect to the park's trails. For example, the Red Jacket Trail Park – Rapidan End of the Trail loop from Minnesota State University, Mankato is a moderate 71-kilometer loop that provides a comprehensive cycling experience through the area's scenic landscapes.
The two primary no-traffic road cycling routes featured in this guide are rated as moderate difficulty. They involve significant distances and some elevation changes, making them suitable for cyclists with a reasonable level of fitness. There is also an easier, shorter route available, the The Anchor Bar and Grill loop from River Hills Mall, which is 30.4 kilometers with minimal elevation gain.
Minneopa State Park offers various parking areas that provide access to its trails and the interconnected regional system. Specific trailheads for routes like the Red Jacket Trail and Minnesota River Trail will have designated parking facilities. It's advisable to check the park's official website or specific route details for the most convenient parking options.
Cyclists frequently praise the seamless connection to the extensive regional trail system, allowing for long, uninterrupted rides away from traffic. The diverse natural beauty, including the Minneopa Falls and the opportunity to spot bison, also contributes to a highly enjoyable experience.
