Ebeltoft Church is first mentioned in 1458 and referred to as a chapel. However, during an archaeological investigation carried out in connection with the restoration in 1983, coins from the 13th century and foundation remains were found under the eastern part of the church, which show that it was built even before the town received its market town rights in 1301, there was a smaller church. Around the year 1500, the church was extended to the current nave with the addition of five vaults and the tower with crenellated gables. In the 16th century, the church had a women's door on the north and a men's door on the south. There was once a porch on the south side connected to the entrance. However, the porch was demolished at the end of the 18th century. The sculpture „Lodvig“ is a worthwhile, humorous bronze figure in Ebeltoft. It is located directly in the historic old town on Adelgadetorvet in the pedestrian zone. The small statue shows a slender, almost bizarre-looking male figure with a bowler hat and walking stick, which often makes passers-by smile. Behind the figure lies a true "Amour fou" (mad love) from 1905, which became famous throughout Denmark. Lodvig was a young apprentice pharmacist in Ebeltoft at the beginning of the 20th century. He fell in love with Katrine, the maid of the strict town bailiff Selmer. When Lodvig one day secretly sneaked into her room, the two were caught by the town bailiff. The overzealous official had the couple arrested for "immoral behavior" and brought to trial. The trial ended with a four-day suspended prison sentence. The inhabitants of Ebeltoft found the punishment completely exaggerated and made the town bailiff a laughingstock. A mockery song and caricatures in national newspapers made the incident known throughout Denmark.
