While hiking along the path in the Wiosło Małe nature reserve, you can come across the remains of an obelisk dedicated to Gottlieb Schmidt (1800–1881). He was an outstanding engineer who, for over half a century, designed and supervised the great regulation of the Vistula River. The monument was destroyed just before the outbreak of World War II and still serves as a reminder of the turbulent history of these lands.

Although we are a stone's throw from Żuławy, the nature reserves are covered by extremely steep, spectacular slopes of the Vistula escarpment, rising several dozen meters above the river level. Walking along the local educational trails sometimes feels like... a light hike in the Bieszczady Mountains!
