The first church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was made of wood, the parish was probably established at the beginning of the 15th century. In 1411, Bishop Piotr Wysz endowed the church. The church was burned down during the Lubomirski Rebellion. In 1666, its reconstruction was undertaken by the parish priest Suchodolski. In 1750, the restored church was consecrated under the patronage of St. Martin. In the 18th century, the Wielowiejski family made efforts to endow and restore the temple, but the church fell into increasingly poor condition. The current brick church for the Tarnawa parish was built in 1856, mostly from the foundation of Countess Joanna Ledóchowska, heiress of the Krzeslow estate, and Wincenty and Paulina Radzimiński. Initially, the countess planned to build a chapel in Czekaj, but when the church in Tarnawa fell into disrepair and looked "like a hermit in a bad habit, whose hips are visible" - the chapel was abandoned. The church was consecrated on October 13, 1974 by Bishop Jan Jaroszewicz.

The history of the church dates back to 1326. After many reconstructions since then and fires that hit it, the wooden structure was changed to brick in 1771-1786.
