This is the second mural in Skierniewice created as part of the “I Am Proud” campaign. Edward Choma was born on December 26, 1889 in Złoczów in the Tarnopol Province, in today’s Eastern Borderlands. On November 3, 1918, he volunteered for service in the Polish Army in Lviv and was assigned to units in the Third Defense of Lviv. He also served as a chaplain in a hospital for the wounded. After the Ukrainians were expelled from the city, on November 29, 1918, he was assigned as a chaplain to the 1st Lviv Rifle Regiment. From July 1919, he was a professional chaplain with the rank of captain. He arrived in Skierniewice with the 26th Infantry Division in October 1921 and took up the position of head of the military chaplaincy district. He was known for his fiery sermons and speeches, in which he appealed to patriotism and work for the newly reborn Polish state, taught soldiers to read and write, and supported national minorities among the military. He partially adapted the former Orthodox church to the needs of the Roman Catholic army. In May 1926, he was appointed the first parish priest of the military parish in Skierniewice. In January 1930, he was delegated to the position of administrator of the military parish in Słonim. At the outbreak of World War II, Father Senior Chaplain Major Edward Choma most likely served as chaplain of the 72nd Infantry Regiment. After the Red Army entered, he was captured by the Soviets in unknown circumstances on September 17, 1939. He was murdered in Katyn in April 1940. Posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński in November 2007.
