The Mispelplein is a special part of Doetinchem where art, history, and symbolism come together. The square is inspired by the medlar flower, which has been part of the city coat of arms of Doetinchem for centuries. Anyone looking at the square from above will see that even the shape of the square represents a medlar flower. In the center of the artwork are 99 cast-iron tiles with medlar flowers, designed by artist couple Anne and Jeroen Kortekaas. According to their idea, every visitor symbolically forms the hundredth medlar flower: "The 100th medlar flower is you." The medlar flower refers to an old legend from the Graafschap Gelre. Knight Van Pont is said to have defeated a red dragon near a medlar tree, after which the flower was given a place in the city coat of arms. Over the centuries, the coat of arms changed several times, but the medlar flowers were always retained. The artwork was originally designed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Doetinchem. It was only in 2023 that the plan finally got a permanent place in the center. Today, the Mispelplein forms a unique meeting place where visitors literally stand in the middle of a piece of Doetinchem's history.

City walk Doetinchem: Discover the history of the city in a unique way. The route is about 2 kilometers long and consists of 14 comic pages spread throughout the city center. I have captured a few pages of the story in photos. During your city walk through Doetinchem, follow the true story of eyewitnesses Ans and Wim, who experienced the bombing of Doetinchem as children. The comics will lead you to the places where their stories took place. A poignant and personal insight into the experience of Doetinchem during and at the end of World War II. A map with which you can walk the entire route is available at the VVV in the Doetinchem City Museum.

This beautiful wooden arched bridge connects Gendringen/NL with Voorst/NL and its lovely heathland. North of the bridge, the river is called the "Oude IJssel" and belongs to the Netherlands, while to the south, the same river is called the "Issel." South of the bridge, the border runs down the middle of the river (W=NL and O=DE). The pedestrian and cycle path is on the Dutch side.

De Bijland is located in the natural area where three major rivers fork: the Rhine, the Waal, and the IJssel. Due to the open connection to the Rhine, De Bijland is easily accessible (kilometer marker 864). This location makes De Bijland particularly suitable as a starting point or stopover for excursions on Dutch waterways. But this area is also very suitable for other forms of recreation. De Gelderse Poort, for example, is an ideal area for hiking and cycling. There are several signposted hiking, cycling, and skating routes there. You can also start one of the numerous cycling routes from De Bijland.
