In the center of the artwork are 99 cast-iron tiles with medlar flowers, designed by artist couple Anne and Jeroen Kortekaas. According to their idea, every visitor symbolically forms the hundredth medlar flower: "The 100th medlar flower is you."
The medlar flower refers to an old legend from the Graafschap Gelre. Knight Van Pont is said to have defeated a red dragon near a medlar tree, after which the flower was given a place in the city coat of arms. Over the centuries, the coat of arms changed several times, but the medlar flowers were always retained.
The artwork was originally designed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Doetinchem. It was only in 2023 that the plan finally got a permanent place in the center. Today, the Mispelplein forms a unique meeting place where visitors literally stand in the middle of a piece of Doetinchem's history.
