Mugron is a small hilltop town with a lovely view. Park near the church and visit the Tree of Liberty, planted in the 19th century. It's majestic, and right next to it is a lovely viewpoint. Take a moment to admire the landscape beneath its canopy of trees. Mugrón is easily explored on foot. You'll find plenty to pack for a picnic, and then head to the leisure center: a lake where you can swim and enjoy water slides with the kids. There's a refreshment bar in season and everything you need for a pleasant time with family or friends, at a very reasonable price! The banks of the Adour also offer lovely walks. Built on the old railway line that connected Saint-Sever to the spa town of Dax, the Chalosse Green Route offers a 34-kilometer stretch on smooth, hard-surfaced ground. The route offers a bucolic atmosphere with landscapes of woods, hills, and meadows. Among the main tourist attractions are the town center of Saint-Sever (whose abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Santiago de Compostela Route), the villages of Mugron and Montfort with its Chalosse Museum, and Montaut, a charming Chalosse village. The Landes-Chalosse destination will delight cyclists thanks to its green route and numerous hiking trails. Several improvements have been made to the crossing of the Saint Pierre du Mont nautical base: The step at the entrance to the area on the east side (Mont de Marsan) has been rectified: a stabilized inclined section has been created. At the level of the swimming lake, the route has been modified: it is no longer necessary to go around the swimming area and venture onto the initial chaotic "single". You can now reach the west exit (Dax side) directly - while keeping your bike in hand. The signage has been updated. The crossing, however, remains unsuitable for bikes with thin tires.

The Lamothe area, particularly in the Landes department, offers a selection of moderate, traffic-free routes perfect for gravel biking. Our guide features 3 distinct routes, each designed to keep you away from busy roads and immersed in nature.
You'll primarily encounter varied terrain typical of the Landes region, including extensive pine forests and paths that follow former railway lines (Voie verte). While the guide's routes are classified as 'moderate' in difficulty, they generally feature gentle hills and well-maintained surfaces suitable for gravel bikes. For example, the The Chalosse Viewpoint – Voie verte de Chalosse loop from Nerbis offers a good mix of forest paths and dedicated cycleways.
Yes, the focus on 'no traffic' routes makes many of these trails suitable for families. The generally moderate difficulty and absence of vehicle traffic provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for all ages. Routes that incorporate sections of the Voie verte de Chalosse are particularly good for families due to their flat, dedicated paths.
The routes around Lamothe offer several scenic spots. You can enjoy panoramic views from The Chalosse Viewpoint, which is part of the The Chalosse Viewpoint – Voie verte de Chalosse loop. The region is also known for its vast pine forests and tranquil lakes, such as those near the Ménasse Pond – Menasse Mont 2 mountain bike route loop, offering beautiful natural settings.
Absolutely. The area is rich in heritage. For instance, the Saint-Sever Church – Saint-Sever Abbey loop from Montaut will take you past the impressive Saint-Sever Church, a significant historical site. Other routes might lead you near charming villages with traditional architecture and smaller religious buildings like Sainte-Croix Church or Saint Martin Church of Audignon.
To best enjoy the no-traffic routes, spring and autumn are ideal. The weather is generally mild, and the natural landscapes are at their most vibrant. Summer can also be pleasant, especially in the mornings or late afternoons, but be mindful of potential heat. Winter offers a peaceful, quiet experience, though some paths might be muddier after rain.
The komoot community highly rates the cycling experience in Lamothe, with an average score of 4.1 stars. Reviewers often praise the tranquility of the routes, the immersive nature of the pine forests, and the feeling of being truly away from traffic. The well-maintained paths and the scenic viewpoints are also frequently highlighted as favorite aspects.
While specific trailhead parking details vary, the starting points for many routes in the Landes department, especially those near villages like Nerbis, Saint-Perdon, or Montaut, typically offer public parking options. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival, but generally, you'll find convenient places to park your vehicle before starting your ride.
Many natural paths and forest trails in the Landes region are dog-friendly, especially if your dog is well-behaved and kept on a leash. However, it's always best to observe local regulations, particularly in protected natural areas or on shared paths like the Voie verte, where specific rules might apply to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all users and local wildlife.
The no-traffic gravel routes in Lamothe are generally moderate in length and elevation, making them accessible for a good day out. Distances typically range from 35 km to over 50 km. For example, the Saint-Sever Church – Saint-Sever Abbey loop is about 51 km with around 410 meters of elevation gain, while the Ménasse Pond – Menasse Mont 2 mountain bike route loop covers about 37 km with 166 meters of ascent. These routes offer enjoyable challenges without overly strenuous climbs.
Accessing the specific trailheads directly by public transport can be challenging as many routes start in smaller villages or rural areas. While regional bus services might connect to larger towns in the Landes department, reaching the exact starting points often requires a car. Planning your trip with a vehicle or considering a combination of public transport to a nearby town and then cycling to the trailhead is recommended.
