The complex is impressive even from the outside and, despite its 1,000-year-old and eventful history, is still in good condition. It has been continuously modernized to accommodate the latest military and artillery technologies.

Beautiful section of gravel in the middle of the fields, in the company of cows. There is no better way to cross the French-Swiss border.

The tuyés are the large towers which stand in the center of the old farms and in which the meat was smoked. Impossible not to stop at the tuyé du Papy Gaby. This Franche-Comté cured institution is also a museum and offers free tours and tastings.

The place called Bassignet is a group of old farms which have been renovated in an exemplary manner to become homes. They pay a magnificent tribute to the traditional rustic architecture of Haut-Doubs. You will find a picnic table at the entrance to Bassignet, along the road. An ideal spot for a break with a view.

The region boasts a diverse network of tracks, rolling trails, and minor roads, offering significant elevation changes and panoramic views. The focus on 'no traffic' routes ensures a peaceful and immersive experience through wooded valleys, dramatic ridges, and pristine waterways.
The region is excellent for gravel biking throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summer is also great, especially with routes winding through extensive forests like the Forêt de la Joux, providing welcome shade. While winter sports are popular, some higher elevation gravel routes might be covered in snow, so checking local conditions is advisable.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, Pontarlier offers several difficult traffic-free gravel routes. For example, the ReMouthable route spans over 122 km with significant elevation gain, and The little Fourgs is a 58 km trail known for its challenging climbs and varied terrain.
While many routes in the region are rated moderate to difficult due to elevation changes, shorter and less technical sections can be found. For a moderate option, consider Gilley at the end of my dreams, which is around 17 km. When planning with family, look for routes with less elevation gain and shorter distances, often found closer to Lac Saint-Point or along the Doubs River.
Many of the gravel bike trails around Pontarlier are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. This is ideal for exploring the diverse landscapes, from forest paths to riverside trails, without needing shuttle arrangements. You can filter for circular routes on komoot to find the best options.
Pontarlier and its surrounding villages offer various parking options, often near trailheads or public spaces. For routes starting directly from Pontarlier, municipal parking lots are available. The region is rich in natural beauty. You can cycle near the stunning Saut du Doubs Waterfall, a striking 27-meter cascade, or visit the powerful karst spring of Source de la Loue. Many trails also offer views of the Jura Mountains, including Mont d'Or, and pass through picturesque gorges like Gorges de Noailles.
Absolutely. A prominent historical landmark is the imposing Joux Castle, a clifftop fortress with a thousand-year history, offering far-reaching views. Many routes pass by or offer detours to this significant site, allowing you to combine your ride with a cultural exploration.
Yes, the varied terrain of the Jura Mountains provides numerous scenic viewpoints. Routes often climb to elevated positions, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding massifs.
