Tips from the Community

Marion
May 6, 2026, Historic Centre of Rye

In the middle of the twelfth century, Rye was an important member of the medieval Cinque Ports Confederation, it was almost entirely surrounded by the sea. Its historical connection with the sea included providing ships for the Crown's service in wartime and involvement in smuggling. The notorious Hawkhurst Gang used their ancient inns The Mermaid Inn (built 1156) and The Olde Bell Inn (built 1390), which are said to be connected by a secret passage.

Very rare in this part of England: huge sand dunes. Denmark vibes 😁

Huge sandy beach with lots of expensive beach bars. From Rye you can take a bus for 2 pounds per person, you can also walk it like we did today, but it's mostly asphalt - better for cycling!

There are lots of lakes between Rye and Camber Sands, this is the biggest. There are only a few places where you can get to the water! According to the sign, the path along the left bank towards Rye is closed until around October 24th due to work. The path on the right is OK, but it's asphalt and always along the road, nice for cycling, but a bit boring for us to walk.
