The origin of the Este Ducal Garden (formerly Public Gardens) can be traced back to 1598, the year Duke Cesare had a large uncultivated area north of the Castle enclosed with a hedge. The transformation into a garden was carried out in the following years following a typology common in Renaissance gardens. In 1634, the construction of the Vigarani small palace was also completed, a beautifully crafted building that preserves the classic characteristics of 17th-century architecture. Subsequently, after almost a century of neglect, under the court of Francesco III, the botanical garden was created, the internal structure of the park was restored until the substantial modifications that occurred in the mid-19th century, which have handed down to us a "mixed" garden area, with a zone of well-designed flowerbeds to maintain a formal connection with the various ducal buildings and the remaining wooded areas.
