August 10, 2026, Castello di Cavriana

The castle of Cavriana, in the province of Mantua, was a military structure probably founded in the 11th century. It was one of the most important fortifications in the Mantua area, with four corner towers, and stood on the hill dominating the town. The castle suffered several incursions in the 14th century by the Visconti of Milan. The structure was enlarged by Francesco I Gonzaga, who also stayed there for a long time to escape the plague and died there in 1407. The Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga commissioned the architect Giovanni da Padova to consolidate the defensive structure and made it an important residence. Among the architects who embellished the residence were Andrea Mantegna and Luca Fancelli, who, given the mild climate, bought some land in the area. Isabella d'Este also stayed in the castle for a long time, during her husband Marquis Francesco II Gonzaga's absences from Mantua. Two other members of the Gonzaga family occupied the castle and met their deaths there: Eleonora de' Medici, wife of Vincenzo I Gonzaga, on September 9, 1611, and Carlo Gonzaga, second son of the 8th Duke of Mantua Carlo I, who died there on August 14, 1631. In the early 17th century, the structure was partially demolished. Around 1770, under Austrian rule, the castle was almost totally razed, and the material was used for the construction of Villa Mirra. Today, of the castle, partially restored and consolidated in 2004, parts of the curtain wall and the tower, transformed into a bell tower, remain.

One of the most beautiful villages in the Veneto region. If there are many people there, it's best to push your bike. Photos are a must.
