Definitely not for all fitness levels. At times, we practically had to carry our bikes! It's a hiking trail littered with large rocks, the kind you'd find in the Dolomites just before a via ferrata. The navigation is completely off! Terrible!

Getting up here is challenging....but very rewarding, for the view and for the satisfaction of having pedaled among the olive trees in perfect solitude, listening to the rhythm of your breathing, with your legs pushing. Priceless emotions!!

Komoot features several dedicated no-traffic gravel bike trails in the San Bartolomeo al Mare area. Our guide highlights 3 such routes, ranging from moderate to difficult, ensuring a varied experience away from vehicle traffic.
The Ligurian Riviera enjoys a mild climate, making gravel biking pleasant for much of the year. Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions with comfortable temperatures and lush scenery. Even winter can be suitable, though some higher elevation routes might be cooler. Summers can be hot, so early morning or late afternoon rides are recommended.
While many routes in the hills involve climbs, the region also offers flatter, coastal sections that are more suitable for families. For a moderate option, consider the Parco del Ciapà – Ciapà Trailhead loop from San Bartolomeo al Mare, which is shorter and offers beautiful views without extreme difficulty.
Many of the natural trails and paths in the Ligurian hinterland are dog-friendly, especially if your dog is accustomed to running alongside a bike or can be carried in a suitable trailer. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash where required, and that you carry enough water for both of you, particularly on longer routes like the Diano San Pietro – View of Diano Marina loop from San Bartolomeo al Mare.
You'll encounter a diverse mix of terrain. Coastal sections might feature paved paths or compacted gravel, while inland routes quickly transition to rolling hills with historic mule tracks, dirt roads through olive groves, and sometimes more technical rocky sections. Expect significant elevation changes on routes like the Diano San Pietro – View of Diano Marina loop.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end in the same location. For example, the Parco del Ciapà – Ciapà Trailhead loop from San Bartolomeo al Mare is a moderate circular route offering scenic views.
The routes often lead to stunning panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Ligurian coast and charming historic villages. You might pass by the Historic Center of Cervo, or enjoy views from higher points like those near Pizzo d'Evigno Summit Cross. The Riviera dei Fiori Cycle Path, while not exclusively gravel, offers beautiful coastal vistas.
San Bartolomeo al Mare and nearby towns like Diano Marina offer various parking options, including public car parks near the coast or in village centers. For routes starting further inland, look for designated parking areas in smaller hamlets or near trailheads. Always check local signage for parking regulations.
While the no-traffic routes venture into quieter areas, many pass through or near charming Ligurian villages. These villages often have small cafes, trattorias, or shops where you can refuel. It's always wise to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially on longer or more remote sections.
The routes vary in length to suit different preferences. You can find shorter loops around 12-15 km, such as the Church of Saint Anne – Sanctuary of Montegrazie loop, up to longer, more challenging rides exceeding 28 km like the Diano San Pietro – View of Diano Marina loop.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.39 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning panoramic views of the Ligurian coast, the peacefulness of the inland trails away from traffic, and the unique experience of riding through ancient olive groves and charming historic villages.
