ATTENTION from July 29, 2022, there is an ordinance prohibiting the continuation of the circular route. The ordinance states: the closure to anyone of trail no. 342 which runs along the riverbed of the Fiastrone in the locality "Gole del Fiastrone". Therefore, once you reach the cave of the friars (among other things with a poorly marked and dangerous path with a significant elevation gain) you must turn back and not complete the circular route. This excursion should be modified.

Avoid this destination. The trail is steep, long, and dangerous, and beyond the river it's even impassable!

I did the entire route with a friend March 22, 2025 ... Up to the river everything is doable, after which an adventure with a capital A! The path that should follow the Fiastrone river is now erased by landslides and brambles. There are two options ... Either go up the steep descent that brought you to the river or continue inside the river. For those who continue inside the river .... Maximum attention! Better in company. We encountered stretches of water with a depth of 80/90 cm. Freezing water! While we were there we saw a live landslide and falling huge rocks. So I would say almost extreme hiking and therefore good training and experience required!

a beautiful scenic route.

Short and relatively simple route, but still requires shoes with a good grip, because the last stretch to get to the Lame has a steep slope and is on scree, so it is easy to slip. I recommend doing it in autumn or spring because it is very exposed to the sun, but not after the rain because it could be slippery. Lame Rosse are beautiful! Negative note: very busy path, so much so that you can't get into a rhythm. You have to continually let people and groups traveling in the opposite direction pass. If you love hiking in the peace of nature, this place is not for you. For the rest, everything is very beautiful!

The best time for family hiking is generally from late spring to early autumn. Late May to early July is particularly spectacular for the 'Fiorita' (flowering) on the Piano Grande of Castelluccio. Autumn offers pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage, though it's always wise to check weather conditions, especially for higher elevations.
Yes, there are several circular routes perfect for families. For example, the On the Piana di Castelluccio – loop tour offers a moderate experience with stunning views of the plateau. Another great option is the Great Sibylline Ring: Monte Macchialta Loop, which is also a moderate circular hike.
Many family-friendly trails lead to or offer views of incredible natural landmarks. You can hike towards the unique Lame Rosse rock formations, or explore the dramatic Infernaccio Gorge. The Lame Rosse Trail is a popular choice for families seeking geological wonders.
Absolutely! Lake Fiastra is a fantastic destination for families, offering clear waters and surrounding trails. The Lake Fiastra Nature Trail is a moderate option that allows you to enjoy the lakeside scenery. While Pilate Lake is more remote and requires a more challenging hike, its unique ecosystem and legends are captivating for older children.
Many trails in Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini are dog-friendly, but regulations can vary. It's generally recommended to keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Always check specific trail rules before heading out, especially in sensitive ecological areas.
Parking is typically available at the main trailheads and near popular attractions. For routes around Lake Fiastra or the Lame Rosse, designated parking areas are usually well-marked. For trails starting from villages, look for public parking spaces. Arriving earlier in the day, especially on weekends, is advisable to secure a spot.
Yes, many villages and towns surrounding the park, such as those near Lake Fiastra or the Piano Grande, offer cafes, restaurants, and agriturismi where families can enjoy local cuisine and refreshments. It's a good idea to pack snacks and water, especially for longer hikes, as amenities might not be directly on the trail.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, from the vibrant 'Fiorita' of Castelluccio to the dramatic gorges and serene lakes. The well-maintained trails and the opportunity to connect with nature are frequently highlighted as key attractions for families.
While many trails involve uneven terrain, some sections and nature paths are more accessible. Look for trails designated as 'easy' or 'nature trails' which often have smoother surfaces. The Cycle and Pedestrian Path along Lake Fiastra, for instance, offers a relatively flat and wide surface suitable for strollers in parts, providing beautiful lakeside views.
Public transport options to reach trailheads within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini can be limited, especially to more remote areas. Buses connect some of the larger towns and villages surrounding the park. For specific trailheads, it's often more convenient to travel by car. It's recommended to check local bus schedules in advance if you plan to rely on public transport.
