March 9, 2026, Sand Dunes in Drents-Friese Wold

The Aekingerzand, also known as the Kale Duinen (Bare Dunes), is an area of drifting sand near Appelscha. It is part of the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. The area is surrounded by forest and heathland, but the area itself is virtually devoid of vegetation. This gives the sand and wind free rein. Areas with drifting sand are rare and are therefore protected throughout Europe. Therefore, afforestation is actively discouraged here to preserve this unique drifting sand area. The unique Aekingerzand is accessible on foot and by bike. Several hiking and cycling routes have been mapped out, but you can also explore the area on your own. You can purchase a map of the area at the visitor center.

On the border of southwest Drenthe and southeast Friesland lies a unique area. The Drents-Friese Wold National Park is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. In 2000, over 6,000 hectares of forest, heathland, drifting sand, and stream valley grasslands were designated as a National Park. The Drents-Friese Wold is among the most beautiful and important nature reserves in Europe and has therefore been designated a Natura 2000 area.

Here you walk through the beautiful heathlands that are so characteristic of this nature reserve. Especially beautiful in August and September, when the heather is in bloom.
