The Lichtenstein quarry is used jointly by two gypsum works. The raw gypsum stone mined here is geologically classified as main anhydrite (z3) and was deposited around 254 million years ago during the Zechstein period in a large shallow sea under tropical evaporation conditions. The total thickness is up to 65 m.
