February 16, 2026, St. Margarethen Church Salzhemmendorf

St. Margaret's Church stands in Salzhemmendorf, a village in the Hameln-Pyrmont district of Lower Saxony. It is a listed building and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Hemmendorf in the Hildesheimer Land-Alfeld church district, within the Hildesheim-Göttingen diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran State Church of Hanover. The single-nave church was built in 1609/1610. The almost square church tower of the predecessor building, with its loopholes and sound arcades dating from the first half of the 15th century, was retained at the east end of the nave. The nave was extended to the south in 1609. In 1683, the timber-framed sacristy, spanned by a barrel vault, was added to the southeast corner between the tower and the nave. The chancel, with its cross-ribbed vault supported by delicate corbels, was originally located on the ground floor of the chancel tower. Remnants of secco paintings from the second half of the 15th century, uncovered in 1987, are visible on its walls. In 1781, the tower was covered with a tent roof above the eaves, from which rises a roof turret with a hexagonal open lantern that culminates in a slender spire. Here, too, the Weserbergland cannot be seen, but Osterwald, Hemmendorf and Elze with the Nordstemmen sugar factory are also visible.

But not into the Weserbergland. Here the view is towards the Osterwald.

A cycle path for relaxed cycling. The surface is partly gravel, partly a narrow lane with grassy areas.
