On the stairs to the Karpfenteich pond, there are eight putti and four ornamental vases. They are made of white-painted aluminum, actually only date from 1984, and stand on stone pedestals about 1.0 m high. The putti are intended to represent the four seasons and the four elements of the earth. The sculptors Günter Anlauf, Fritz Becker, Heinrich Kube, Dietrich Starcke, and Harald Haake, who were involved in their creation, were inspired by porcelain models from KPM for the design of these figures. The urn vases were created by Harald Haacke based on a sketch in the so-called Knobelsdorff sketchbook. The Carp Pond in the park of Charlottenburg Palace was originally designed as a yacht harbor and was accessible by boat via an inlet to the Spree River. This allowed people to travel to Charlottenburg Palace on pleasure boats or small barges. These had to be pulled from the shore by draft animals and people over long distances. The boats sailed from the Spree into the yacht harbor. From there, the travelers marveled at the grand parterre in all its splendor. With the expansion of roads, travel became more convenient, and the harbor became obsolete. The garden designers transformed it into a picturesque pond with winding side arms. On the west side of the bank, there was a carp feeding area. If you rang a bell, the famous moss carp would slowly appear. Unfortunately, the over 150-year-old fish froze to death during a very cold winter, but the Carp Pond retained its name. Currently, only half of the old Siemensbahn crossing over the Spree River remains. As part of the reactivation by the i2030 partners, this structure will also be rebuilt. Two consecutive tied-arch bridges are planned over the old and new branches of the Spree. The entire structure will be 144 meters long. Intensive coordination with the Waterways and Shipping Authority is taking place during the planning process. A good overview of the existing route can be obtained from the air.
