Ceramic column "Life in Köpenick" by Christian Uhlig (1986) Scenes from life in the former town of Köpenick; the bridge represents the crossing of the Dahme and Spree rivers – on the bridge: car and tram (still in white/red) = road traffic – a ship for passenger and freight transport – and a sunbathing couple representing the numerous leisure activities

Albert Mentzel was not a laundry owner. Mentzel was an authorized signatory and friend of Carl Spindler, the owner of the Spindler dry cleaning and laundry business. Mentzel handled the laundry's financial and legal affairs.

What is often forgotten is that the Kie(t)ze (districts) originated through the resettlement of Slavic inhabitants from the towns conquered by the Ascanians in the 12th and 13th centuries in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, founded by Albert the Bear. The marches were the empire's defensive territories against Slavic invasions. Albert the Bear was the first Margrave of Brandenburg. He was authorized to raise armies for defense. The Slavic inhabitants of the Kie(t)ze had to deliver fresh food, mostly fish, to the castle or town and help with necessary work in the town. Kie(t)ze existed, for example, near Köpenick, Brandenburg an der Havel, Küstrin, Bad Freienwalde, Potsdam, Spandau, Grabow, Gröben, and Lebus. Here in Köpenick, the residents had fishing rights and were granted use of the Kietzer Feld (field) to the south. According to the old right of way, the three alleys—Kaumanns Gasse, Breite Gasse, and Judisgasse—must always be open so that residents who don't live near the water can also reach the river. And these aren't Köpenick's oldest buildings; Köpenick Castle, for example, dates back to the 17th century.
