The Hippodrome in Potsdam is a historic garden complex in Park Sanssouci, west of Charlottenhof Palace. It was built between 1836 and 1839 on behalf of the Crown Prince (later King Frederick William IV) according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné and Hermann Sello. [1, 2, 3, 4] What you should know: Origin: It was intended to be the prelude to a grand Italian villa complex, which, however, was never realized. It is the remnant of Schinkel's attempt to reconstruct ancient Roman villas. Architecture: The circular path is framed by a small grove and features two opposing ancient seating niches (stibadia). [1, 2, 3] Special Feature: At times (from 1963 to 1980), the famous equestrian statue of Frederick the Great stood here in the Hippodrome.

An idyllic little castle with a small castle garden and a little history to go with it. The castle opened its doors today for the first time in 30 years for the 2025 Heritage Open Day and was open for visitors, including a guided tour. The castle garden is always open.
