Roman Baths (Römische Bäder) in Park Sanssouci

Highlight • Historical Site

The villa with the tower, which resembles Italian country houses of the 15th century, served as court house for the court gardener. From the small garden, whose beds are planted with corn, hemp, artichokes and tobacco, among other things, you get through the arcade hall in the actual Roman bath. It is partially modeled on an antique house and served the crown prince as a museum site of the memory of Italy.

tell their stories.

Twelve figures of leading French sculptors of the 18th century are set up around the large fountain below the palace, in the "garden paterre" and in the center of the main avenue. Until 1842 there was only one water basin. Only with the construction of the waterworks on the banks of the Havel does the fountain bubble here as well.

The 12 figures represent the four elements (earth, fire, water, air) surrounded by eight gods (Apollo, Diana, Juno, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Minerva, Venus). All figures stand on 1.31 meters high, round ones
Marble plinths.

The first figures, Mercury and Venus, were erected in 1750. They were created in 1748 by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Pigalle. Frederick the Great got it from the French King Louis XV. given in return for valuable horses that he had received.

Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the Orangery Palace built on the Bornstedt hills between 1851 and 1864. Based on his designs, the architects Stüler and Hesse drew up plans for a building in the Italian Renaissance style. The building houses a painting room, former guest and servants' apartments, some of which now serve as museums, and halls for overwintering potted plants.

Built between 1763 and 1769 at the end of the Great Allee in the west of Sanssouci Park, the New Palace with its mighty, 55-meter-high dome is the last baroque palace to be built in Prussia. The Marble Gallery and the Shell Hall are among the things you can visit - depending on the status of any renovation work, it is advisable to check which rooms are currently open before your visit.
