The Vleeshal is a historic building on the Grote Markt in Haarlem, which currently houses the Hal location of the Frans Hals Museum. The Meat Hall is a magnificent example of the Northern Renaissance, with Renaissance ornaments applied to a Gothic floor plan (plan and elevation). Renaissance forms include pilasters, rustication, Tuscan columns (inside), volute ornaments (above the cellar entrances), and obelisks. Inspiration for this came from model drawings by the Antwerp artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. Bull and ram heads on the facades still recall the original function of the building. The hall is characterized by a so-called volute facade.

The historic alleys of Haarlem invite you on a journey through time into the city's Dutch history. Particularly charming are the narrow, cobblestone streets around the Grote Markt, where former merchant houses and water-cooled canals bear witness to past golden ages. Typical are the stepped gables on the courtyard side, the open facade surfaces, and small step shops that have served as craft businesses or inns for centuries. A highlight is the Gedempte Oude Weg, one of the oldest alleys in the city, where craft businesses and merchant families similar to the Fuggers settled in the Middle Ages. The architecture tells stories of lime kilns, spice shops, and printers, whose works made Haarlem known beyond the province's borders. Today, the historic alleys combine visitor experiences with modern lifestyle: cafés, boutiques, and galleries mingle among centuries-old brick walls. Walks through the streets convey a sense of the slow pace of Dutch urban development and invite you to enjoy Haarlem's rich tradition of preservation.
