Construction of the Baltic Sea's first waterborne lighthouse began in the spring of 1962 to replace the Kalk Grund (1876–1910) and Flensburg (1910–1963) lightships. Savings in personnel costs, the greater height of the light with fixed sectors, and unrestricted operation during ice conditions were the main reasons for replacing the lightship with an unmanned tower. The lighthouse was commissioned on June 11, 1963, as the first fully automated lighthouse on the German coast. It is maintained by the Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority and monitored by the traffic control center in Travemünde. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leuchtturm_Kalkgrund
