St. Johann Baptist Church in Solln

After Solln's population grew at the end of the 19th century, aided by the construction of the Isar Valley Railway, the old Catholic Solln church of St. Johann Baptist had become too small. Plans to enlarge it were rejected as unfeasible. The new church of St. Johann Baptist was completed in 1905 according to plans by Franz Rank. The church was only slightly damaged in World War II. In 1966, during a renovation, the interior was (unfortunately?) completely redesigned. The original Art Nouveau furnishings were removed and the high altar was replaced by a free-standing altar. The south entrance has an elongated porch with an ornate portal. The portal is a stonemason's work from the late 19th century and is a copy of the Mannerist church portal of the Tückelhausen monastery. Its installation in the new church was a condition of the architectural competition. The stylistic differences between the portal and the rest of the church building probably also explain the elongated porch.

The church was inaugurated in 2008. A high bell tower was deliberately avoided in order to preserve the old church's distinctive image in the town centre. Inside, two light wells, sgn. "Light cannons" for pleasant lighting. The chancel made of exposed concrete takes some getting used to. As a contrast, you should definitely visit the old village church of St. Nicholas, which still has a Gothic chancel with a painted vaulted ceiling.
