The dome was designed by Paolo Massoni from Reggio and built between 1625 and 1629. The church was enriched in 1765 by a bell tower and completed in 1782 by the facade designed by Pietro Armani. The current stepped churchyard was built in 1816, remodeled between 1926 and 30. The interior is in the shape of a Latin cross with a single nave. It preserves precious carved choir stalls from the Baroque period, in marble and wood from different periods, but mainly from the 17th century. The paintings are valuable: in the left nave, inside the chapel of S. Scolastica, there is the SS. Trinità by Alessandro Tiarini, also author of the Martyrdom of S. Barbara (1625) in the third chapel; in the second chapel, there is the beautiful San Michele Arcangelo by Pietro Desani (1627) and in the first the Martyrdom of SS. Placido and Bibbiana by Paolo Emilio Besenzi (1648); in the right transept St. Peter and St. Gioconda by Mastelletta (1639); in the dome (or lantern), the Eternal in glory and Angels by Camillo Gavassetti (c. 1630) (c) https://www.reggioemiliawelcome.it/it/reggio-emilia/scopri-il-territorio/arte-e-cultura/chiese-e-chiostri/chiesa-di-s-pietro

The square takes its name from the bloody episode of July 7, 1960 when, during a union demonstration, five workers from Reggio (Lauro Farioli, Ovidio Franchi, Emilio Reverberi, Marino Serri, Afro Tondelli) were killed by the police. The massacre was the culmination of a period of high tension and clashes throughout Italy following the formation of the Tambroni government with the decisive support of the MSI, and the choice of Genoa (a “partisan” city and former Gold Medal of the Resistance) as the venue for the MSI party congress. The 5 killed Reggio Emilia residents are remembered by the monument by Giacomo Fontanesi, dedicated to their memory. Piazza Martiri is adjacent to Piazza della Vittoria with which, following the recent redevelopment of both, it forms a single large meeting space for the city. Some of the most representative monuments and buildings of the city overlook it: the Teatro Municipale Valli, the Palazzo dei Musei, the Ex Palazzo della Banca d'Italia, the east side of the Isolato San Rocco and the Monument to the Resistance. The latter, inaugurated on 25 April 1958, is a bronze work on a granite base by the sculptor Remo Brioschi. Not far away, next to the theatre is the shrine bearing the names of the fallen of the Reggio Resistance for the independence of our country. The square hosts numerous initiatives and city events throughout the year and, every Tuesday and Friday, is animated by the stalls of the weekly market. October 2, 2024, Porta Santa Croce

After being renovated in the 15th century, it was incorporated into the bastion built here in the mid-16th century. In 1858, restoration work began on the gate, which Duke Francesco V d’Este contributed to with the sum of L.15,000. It was precisely because of this donation that it was decided to name the gate after the duke and to place coats of arms on it with the eagle, symbol of the Este family, sculpted by Ilario Bedotti. In 1859, the revolution broke out and Bedotti was unable to finish the coats of arms because he was called to arms. With the change of government and the expulsion of the Este family, the gate was given its old name again and Bedotti had to adapt the coat of arms, replacing the Este eagle with the cross of the House of Savoy. In that same year, on August 19, 1859, warmly welcomed by the “popol giost”, General Giuseppe Garibaldi passed through this gate on his way to the lower Reggio area to inspect as commander the troops of the Piedmontese military league, gathering volunteers in the provinces. An episode not reported in the chronicles but passed down orally tells that some women of Santa Croce brought their children to Garibaldi so that he could baptize them civilly, something that had already happened in other cities. These children became sacred for the righteous people of Santa Croce and if someone did not treat them with due manners they were addressed with these words “Lasa stèr col ragàz cl’e stè batzè da Garibaldi….” (c) https://www.reggioemiliawelcome.it/it/reggio-emilia/scopri-il-territorio/arte-e-cultura/monumenti-e-opere-artistiche/arco-di-porta-santa-croce

The square in front of the Church of San Prospero is commonly called Little Square (Piasa Céca). Its origins date back to the end of the 10th century, when Bishop Teuzone had the new church dedicated to the Patron Saint built behind the Cathedral.
