Very nice here 🥰

Relatively low peak with a nice view! Warning: the climb from San Lorenzo to Vaccoli is very rewarding and fun if you consider the altitude at which you move. If you want something more challenging you can climb from S. Maria del Giudice and choose the path on the right at the fork marked with 2 blue sections that climbs with short rocky sections and loose rocks. There are some easy climbing sections and if you want you can add others if you move away from the path for a moment. Obviously be careful if you intend to climb up, it is necessary to check what you take in your hands because not everything you touch is good, there are flakes and rocks "only supported".

I recommend using poles, and not doing it downhill shortly after the rain like I did (risking my ankle going off)

Pisa offers a fantastic selection of family-friendly hiking trails. Our guide features over 890 routes, with more than 330 specifically rated as easy, making them perfect for families with children of all ages. You'll find everything from gentle strolls through historic towns to scenic paths in the rolling Pisan Hills.
Yes, Pisa has several easy loop trails that are great for families. While some paths in the more rugged Monti Pisani might be challenging for strollers, many routes through the Pisan Hills or along the coast are much flatter. For a unique and accessible experience, consider the historical St. James's Way - Stage 6, which offers a relatively flat section suitable for a leisurely family walk.
The Pisa region boasts diverse natural beauty. You can explore the unique geothermal landscapes around places like Le Biancane Geothermal Park, or discover the dramatic geological formations of The Balze of Volterra. The Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Nature Park also offers extensive pine forests and wetlands, perfect for spotting local flora and fauna.
Absolutely! Pisa is rich in history. Beyond the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa and Square of Miracles, many trails lead to fascinating sites. For example, you can hike to the Rocca di San Paolino fortress near Ripafratta, or explore the ancient aqueduct, Acquedotto Nottolini. The charming town of Volterra, accessible via routes like Through the streets of Volterra, is also steeped in Etruscan history.
The best times for family hiking in Pisa are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the landscapes are vibrant with spring blooms or autumn colors. Summer can be quite hot, especially in July and August, so if you hike then, plan for early mornings or late afternoons and choose shaded routes.
Many starting points for trails in and around Pisa are accessible by public transport, particularly those closer to urban centers or well-known towns. Pisa itself has a good bus network, and regional trains connect to various towns in the province. For trails further afield in the Pisan Mountains or natural parks, checking local bus schedules or considering a car might be necessary.
For spring hikes in Pisa, layering is key. Mornings can be cool, but temperatures often rise significantly by midday. We recommend comfortable walking shoes with good grip, breathable clothing (e.g., moisture-wicking fabrics), and a light jacket or fleece. Don't forget sun protection like hats and sunscreen, even on cloudy days, and bring plenty of water.
Many trails in the Pisa region are dog-friendly, allowing you to bring your furry family members along. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in nature reserves or areas with livestock, and be sure to carry water for them. The extensive Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Nature Park, for instance, offers many paths where dogs are welcome, provided they are under control.
Yes, especially on trails that pass through or near villages and towns. The Pisan Hills are dotted with charming hamlets where you can often find a local trattoria or cafe for refreshments. For example, routes around San Giuliano Terme offer opportunities to enjoy local hospitality. Even on more remote trails, it's always wise to pack snacks and drinks, especially with children.
The komoot community highly rates hiking in Pisa, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's diverse landscapes, from the gentle rolling hills to the more rugged mountains, and the opportunity to combine outdoor activity with cultural exploration. The well-maintained paths and the chance to discover hidden historical gems are frequently highlighted as favorites.
For families seeking a bit more of a challenge, there are several moderate trails that offer rewarding experiences. The Pisa Trail: Monte Moriglione di Penna Loop is a great option, offering stunning views from the Pisan Mountains. Another excellent choice is the Lower Cecina Valley Ridge Trail, which provides beautiful scenery and a good workout.
