This impressive artillery fort was built in the 1860s and was designed to protect the lower Thames from attack. It replaced earlier fortifications dating back to the 15th century. The fort is free to roam and features free parking, picnic tables, a playground, and toilets with disabled facilities.

Tilbury Fort once protected London’s seaward approach from its original construction in the 16th century, right up until the Second World War. Now an English Heritage site, the fort is the very best example of this type of sea defence in the country. As an English Heritage site, you will need to book tickets in advance if you want to pay a full visit during your ride. All information regarding Tilbury Fort can be found here: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/tilbury-fort/

Gateway to the beautiful Rainham Marshes - a haven for all kinds of wildlife; birds, water voles, dragonflies and more. It’s also part of the Thames Estuary so you’ll get a glimpse of the river as you roll through. There are dedicated cycle paths across the Marshes, which make for both scenic and speedy riding!
