Hornbek, a Germanic circular settlement, was mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register in 1230 as "Horgenbece." The Mühlenbach (Hornbeek) stream was part of the Limes Saxoniae, the border fortification between Saxony and Polabia (mentioned in 1070 as the Horchenbici fortified point). In 1391, the Council of Lübeck purchased Hornbek to ensure the security of the Via Regia, the Old Salt Road, which ran through the mill estate. Due to the construction of the Stecknitz Canal, the Via Regia lost its importance, so Hornbek was ceded to Lauenburg in 1747.
