The 🟣 PURPLE PATH 🟣 is a sculpture trail that connects Chemnitz, the 2025 Capital of Culture, with 38 towns and cities in the region. Numerous artists have contributed works of various kinds, telling an unknown story of the region. More information at https://chemnitz2025.de/purple-path/ Bettina Pousttchi "42 Days" Oberes Tor 2, Schwarzenberg Material: Steel, powder-coated "Bending and twisting are the constants in the artistic oeuvre of the German-Iranian sculptor Bettina Pousttchi, born in Mainz in 1971 and living in Berlin. The artist twists, bundles, arranges objects from road traffic, such as guardrails, railings, or bollards, placing them vertically, paints them, or chrome-plates them. Her sculptures are fascinating and simultaneously reminiscent of the forces that have bent them. They are symbols for the traffic-accelerated human being who is continually called upon to resist the bending machines of industrial society. From the Squeezer series, Pousttchi places several groups of 42 objects reminiscent of street bollards in the urban space of Schwarzenberg. Their squashed and twisted forms evoke both rebellion and precariousness. The powder-coated, slate-gray surfaces of the individual elements convey a sense of unity. Arranged in seven groups, they stand close together, leaning toward one another or controversial in their own deformation. Like groups of people in a marketplace, citizens of the mining town of Schwarzenberg, they seem to be putting their heads together, thus referring to the 42 days of the legendary "Free Republic" of Schwarzenberg, which the Chemnitz writer Stefan Heym describes in his 1984 novel *Schwarzenberg*. After the surrender of the German Wehrmacht, after the liberation from fascism on May 8, 1945, the citizens of Schwarzenberg realized that the Allies had simply forgotten them; they were occupied by neither the Soviets nor the Americans. The utopia, the free and autonomous republic, was quickly proclaimed, which unfortunately only lasted 42 days. (Text: Alexander Ochs / Ulrike Pennewitz)
