April 30, 2026, Covered Wooden Bridge Over the Ill (Nenzing–Gais)

On 18.06.2013, the wooden bridge over the Kleine Ill was completed with the utmost care and craftsmanship, a work that impressively keeps the centuries-old art of timber construction alive. Under the expert guidance of their teachers, the students of HTL Rankweil planned and built this masterpiece on behalf of Stadtwerke Feldkirch. The last roof panel was carefully nailed on last Monday and the safety scaffolding was professionally removed. For the young timber construction experts, this project was far more than just a school assignment: it was a living experience, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The bridge now stands not only as a functional crossing over the Kleine Ill, but also as a symbol of the connection between past and future in timber construction. A proud testament to craftsmanship precision and architectural elegance in harmony with nature.

This cycle path is much nicer than the one that follows the Ill River/motorway directly.

As early as the year 880, a church was mentioned on this site in connection with the cathedral chapter in the city of Chur, so we can assume that at least a small church building already existed on this site at that time. The church was first documented in 1485, the nave was built around 1680, and further alterations were made to the building between 1824 and 1827. What is special about this church is that the organ, which is usually located on a gallery above the entrance, is located here on the right in the nave – very special and extremely rare. Overall, a very impressive church, with the three altars in particular worthy of a closer look. The steel bell in front of the church is an absolute rarity, as it was cast in 1917 – towards the end of the First World War, when raw materials were very, very scarce. Because the bells needed repair, they were replaced with bronze bells in 2017. Further information about this church can be found on Wikipedia at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfarrkirche_N%C3%BCziders.

The parish church in Ludesch – also known as the New Parish Church – is dedicated to Saint Sebastian and dates back to 1639, thus being of Baroque origin. A special feature of this church is the walled cemetery that completely surrounds the church grounds, as well as its somewhat "spartan" furnishings for the Baroque period. Overall, however, it is a building worth seeing, with its own unique character and charisma – well worth seeing. Further information can be found on Wikipedia at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neue_Pfarrkirche_Ludesch.

At this location, there is an old railway bridge over the Ill River, which now serves as a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. It originally connected the Bürs substation on the other side of the Ill River to the main line running via Bludenz. The tracks of this connection are still there today, but are no longer in use.
