A highlight of my bike rides. That's why I'm also cycling it today, December 24, 2025, on my Christmas Eve ride. ;-)

🚴♀️ Saar Cycle Route – From Merzig to Saarlouis with a River View This section of the Saar Cycle Route is one of the most beautiful in Saarland: On a well-developed, mostly paved path, you cycle directly along the river – past locks, small harbors, meadows, and shady rows of trees. The route is flat, pleasantly quiet, and ideal for leisurely cyclists and touring cyclists. 🌅 Tip: Early in the morning, a fine mist often lies over the Saar, while in the late afternoon, the sun bathes everything in warm light – ideal for atmospheric breaks with a view of the water.

Built in the 17th century, it has been an important pilgrimage site and popular hiking destination ever since. Worth seeing is the St. Mark's Chapel, high on the Wahlener Platte with a view of the small town of Wahlen (the second largest district in the municipality of Losheim am See). Rebuilt in the mid-18th century, completed in 1868, built on the previous chapel in Urwahlen, which was devastated by Swedish-French troops in the Thirty Years' War (1616 to 1648), followed by the plague. Urwahlen had to be abandoned, the remaining people settled in the surrounding forest and swampland, and today's Wahlen gradually emerged. The two ancient linden trees in front of the chapel, which frame the entrance, are beautiful.

Makes you think about the millions of fallen soldiers... and you wonder why? I always have in mind the young people behind these simple numbers.
