🚲✨ The municipality of Metelen, also affectionately known as the "little Vechte town", is a fascinating settlement in the western Münsterland, whose pulse has been determined for over 1100 years by the close connection between monastic life and civic everyday life.

History: The only written mention of Ascheberg Castle is in the form of a chronological note inserted into the memorial book of the Steinfurt Johanniter Commandery, dating from around 1450. According to this, the complex was destroyed in 1164 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald von Dassel, in a feud between the Lords of Steinfurt, who were related to him, and the Lords of Ascheberg. In the inventory of possessions from 1206, compiled by Odelhildis, noblewoman of Ascheberg, the complex is no longer mentioned. 🌳 The Münsterland Cycle Route is known for its beautiful, tree-lined sections, which evoke the typical "tunnel feeling" of a converted railway line. The section between Steinfurt-Burgsteinfurt and Rheine is particularly noteworthy.

🌳 The Steinfurt Bagno and its adjacent lake are the heart of recreation in Steinfurt. The park is a historic English landscape garden, laid out in the 18th century by the Counts of Bentheim and Steinfurt, and is now freely accessible around the clock.

🏰⛏️ Ascheberg Castle The actual walls of the hilltop castle, which was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Ascheberg, no longer exist. What is still recognizable today is an impressive, two-part rampart system measuring approximately 160 x 100 meters with deep ditches. The castle was probably built in the 10th century during the Carolingian era. It experienced a major turning point around 1164/1179 when it was destroyed and razed in a feud with the Lords of Steinfurt.
