Great to get make progress indeed, but I find it quite dull after 10 km. So if you are like me, take some "shortcuts" over the hills or go for other highlights along the path and then you will be happy to be back on the Vennbahn for some km ;)

Belgium offers a vast network of dedicated paths for touring cyclists. On komoot, you can find over 32,000 no-traffic touring cycling routes across the country, catering to various skill levels and preferences.
Yes, Belgium is very beginner and family-friendly for no-traffic cycling. Over 13,000 routes are rated as easy, often utilizing the extensive RAVeL network of former railway lines and towpaths, or flat coastal paths. These routes provide safe and enjoyable experiences away from car traffic.
The routes offer diverse scenery. In Flanders, you'll find picturesque coastal areas with dunes, charming canals, and polder landscapes. The Ardennes region in Wallonia provides more rugged, forested terrains and stunning river valleys. Unique experiences like Cycling Through the Water in Bokrijk or Cycling through the trees in Bosland offer truly memorable natural encounters.
Absolutely. Belgium is home to sections of major long-distance routes like the Vennbahn Cycle Trail, which follows a former railway line through Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg, offering gentle inclines. The RAVeL network also provides extensive traffic-free paths suitable for multi-day tours, connecting various regions and towns.
Yes, many no-traffic routes in Belgium are designed as loops. For example, you can enjoy the Loop along the coast from Knokke to Breskens, offering beautiful seaside views. The 'knoopunten' (junction) system also makes it easy to create your own circular routes on the fly.
Many routes pass by interesting sights. You might encounter natural wonders like the Bayehon Waterfall or the unique Boardwalks Through the Hohes Venn Moor. Historic castles such as Gravensteen Castle or Reinhardstein Castle are also accessible. The Vennbahn Cycle Path at Raeren Station is a highlight in itself.
The komoot community highly rates the no-traffic touring cycling routes in Belgium, with an average score of 4.38 stars. Reviewers often praise the excellent cycling infrastructure, the variety of landscapes from flat polders to rolling Ardennes hills, and the peaceful, car-free environment that allows for immersive exploration.
Beyond traditional routes, Belgium offers truly unique experiences. In Limburg, you can cycle through the Hoge Kempen National Park, including the famous 'Cycling through Water' in Bokrijk and 'Cycling through the Trees' in Bosland. These innovative paths provide unforgettable interactions with nature.
Spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) are generally ideal. The weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are vibrant. Spring brings blooming flowers, like the famous bluebells in Hallerbos, while autumn offers beautiful foliage. Summer can also be great, but routes might be busier, especially in popular coastal or forest areas.
Many trailheads and popular starting points for traffic-free routes, especially those part of the RAVeL network or national parks, offer designated parking areas. It's advisable to check the specific route details on komoot for information on parking facilities near the start of your chosen tour.
Yes, Belgium's cycling culture means you'll often find charming cafes, 'friteries' (chip shops), and traditional pubs (cafés) in villages and towns along popular routes. Many are cyclist-friendly, offering a perfect spot to refuel and enjoy local treats like waffles or Belgian beer.
