You start the tour at the former Kalterherberg train station and from there you cycle north on the Vennbahn cycle path. At Reichenstein Monastery you cycle over the first of a total of three impressive viaducts on this tour. The views from up there are simply wonderful. After seven kilometers, don't miss a detour to Monschau, because the town on the Rur impresses with its idyllic half-timbered houses and its castle complex.
On the edge of the High Fens you continue to Lammersdorf, where you can visit the farm museum. The rest of the route is relaxed, because from here it's almost all downhill. Past Roetgen you reach Raeren with its former train station and signal box - you can marvel at old locomotives and wagons here and there is also a café.
Before Kornelimünster, which is characterized by a historic town center, the cycle path runs over the impressive Itertal viaduct. A little later the Rollefbach viaduct awaits you and then the Vennbahn takes you to Aachen. We recommend a stroll through the beautiful city center with the magnificent cathedral and the town hall. On weekends, the bike bus will take you back to the starting point after the tour.

We set off on wet roads and in cool weather. For the first time I also put on long sleeves. The first 40 km there were simply no catering facilities open, yet there were a lot of cyclists on the road. Today we would ride the Vennbahn to Aachen. But it went down almost permanently. We left Monschau to the right. We did pass the Reichenstein monastery and drove into Kornelimünster. Meanwhile, the sun was back and the catering industry opened. If you are in Aachen, you will also pass by the Dom. That was beautiful! After border hopping between Belgium and Germany, we now entered the Netherlands in Vaals. The Dutch sign was neatly hidden in the green. 60 m past the border we were already at our hotel Vallis. They are on Airb&b, but what a beautiful room 😍. An address to write down.
On the third and last day of the Vennbahn tour, it's back "home". After a night of heavy rain and thunderstorms at Monschau train station, we left the mobile home there and set off for Aachen shortly after 9 a.m. when the weather was dry again. From Lammersdorf it was almost all downhill. Since we "driven away" before the predicted rain, we only made a 5 minute break in Walheim and the kids practically rode the entire 50km. Shortly after the Aachen Arkaden, the rain caught up with us and we arrived at one of our favorite restaurants on Pontstrasse, a bit wet. 😋 Later we all want to take the bus back to the mobile home.
1st day stage of the Vennbahn cycle path from Aachen to Troisvierges: Combination of stage 1 https://www.komoot.com/tour/736104566 and stage 2 https://www.komoot.com/tour/736105070 from https://www.komoot.com/user/ostbelgien in one day The first day on the Vennbahn with my daughter was fun. And we were lucky with the weather: just a few drops of rain once, otherwise mostly cool, but overall pleasant and even sunny in places.
Vennbahn cycle path - typical railway cycle path, tarred and with a pleasant gradient up to the HochVenn. The descent to Monschau was steep and gravelled with path damage. Next time just down the main street...
Done ... we arrived in Aachen with bright sunshine and a blue sky. The sun is burning in the ice cream parlor and the hairstyle is perfect because there wasn't much to do today. The first 2 km were sporty, after that it was basically "let it roll". Let yourself roll down the mountain at 20 km/h - without pedalling.
After a stroll through Monschau, it goes uphill ↗️ back to the Vennbahnradweg and then down to Aachen ↘️ .Through a forest in the German-Belgian border area, it goes in the direction of Lammersdorf and Roetgen, the "gateway to the Eifel". From Lammersdorf to Roetgen it's 10 km and on this way I didn't even have to pedal 🙂 and constantly had a speed of 25-30 km on the speedometer, that was very relaxing ☺️. You can make a great stop at the former Raeren train station, because there is a beer garden here with many different types of beer. The abbey town of Kornelimünster greets me with its medieval backdrop. Unfortunately, the abbey is currently covered with scaffolding. The tour then leads past the Rote Erde train station to Aachen. In Aachen I made another stop at the Oecher ice cream factory. There is super delicious ice cream here 🍦, highly recommended. https://www.eis-treff.de/ The Vennbahn cycle path is paved throughout. Overall a great tour with lots of beautiful nature. 👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Weather: 🌤️☀️ 🌡️12
Completely problem-free ride on good paved roads. It starts in Aachen with a large number of bicycle streets.
