This picturesque little town south of 17 Mile Dr is a sight in itself. Beautiful wooden houses, numerous art galleries, and the hometown of several Hollywood stars. Clint Eastwood even served as mayor of this small town of approximately 4,000 residents.

The South Plateau Trail is an almost 2-mile long trail that winds through Monterey Pine forest. There is no too much elevation gain and the trail is considered a relatively straightforward trail.

The actor felt that the many regulations were tyranny. So he decided - true to his image as a determined hero - to run for mayor in order to change things. He financed his campaign himself, went from house to house and introduced himself personally. With great success. On April 8, 1986, 72 percent of the community voted for him as the new mayor. Eastwood had barely been sworn in when he abolished numerous regulations. He had a new tourist parking lot built and expanded the library to include a children's book section.

Our first stop is in Carmel. Carmel had a very famous mayor: The path from actor to politician is not unusual in the USA: Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of California, Ronald Reagan even became president. And Clint Eastwood was once mayor. The role of the trigger-happy inspector Harry Callahan made Eastwood a cult figure. The film fees also benefited Carmel. Eastwood saved an old ranch from demolition and converted it into a hotel. But Eastwood repeatedly came into conflict with the city's regulations. There were plenty of them in Carmel. In order to preserve the original structure of the community, the city administration had banned neon signs, fast food restaurants and public telephone booths. Even eating ice cream on the streets was not allowed for fear of too much garbage. In 1985, the authorities prohibited Eastwood from building a small office building - for reasons of historical preservation.

Beautiful little place on the Pacific coast about 180 km from San Francisco. We felt very comfortable here.

Very beautiful, spacious beach with a great view. The sea is a bit rough (September) and cold for swimming (15°C). But for walking, jogging, ... a dream

Dogs are generally permitted on paved roads, in campgrounds, and on most fire roads. However, they are typically not allowed on unpaved trails or in natural areas to protect wildlife. Always keep your dog on a leash no longer than six feet. For specific regulations and any updates, it's best to check the official California State Parks website for Garrapata State Park.
Yes, many of the dog-friendly options in this guide are rated as easy. For example, the trails leading to Garrapata State Park 🏖️ itself offer gentle walks along the coast. While the guide's listed routes are primarily near Carmel, the general coastal bluff trails in Garrapata State Park are often flat and accessible for a relaxed stroll with your dog.
The terrain varies significantly. Along the coast, you'll find sandy paths and bluff trails with stunning ocean views. Inland, the landscape shifts to chaparral-covered hillsides and canyons. While many dog-friendly areas are relatively flat, some sections might involve gentle inclines. Always be prepared for varied surfaces, from packed earth to potentially rocky sections, especially near the bluffs.
Spring (March to May) is ideal for experiencing the park's vibrant wildflower blooms, including the famous calla lilies. Fall (September to November) offers pleasant temperatures and the chance to see monarch butterflies. Winter (December to April) is excellent for whale watching from the coastal bluffs. Summers can be foggy, but often provide a cool escape from inland heat. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
While dogs have restricted access to some trails, you can still enjoy breathtaking views from designated dog-friendly areas. The coastal bluffs offer panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, where you might spot sea lions, harbor seals, and migrating gray whales. The park's rugged coastline and the iconic Garrapata State Park 🏖️ itself provide stunning backdrops for walks with your canine companion.
While many of the specific trails within Garrapata State Park have restrictions for dogs, some of the routes listed in this guide, such as the Gibson Beach – China Cove loop from Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo or the Carmel Mission and Beach Loop, offer pleasant circular walks in nearby dog-friendly areas, allowing you to explore diverse scenery without retracing your steps.
Always bring plenty of water for both yourself and your dog, a leash (required at all times), waste bags, and a portable bowl. Depending on the weather, consider sun protection for both of you. It's also wise to carry a basic first-aid kit for minor scrapes or paw injuries.

Focus on the coastal bluff trails and beach access points, which are generally dog-friendly. Exploring these areas during off-peak hours or weekdays can offer a more secluded experience. Always respect park regulations regarding dog access to protect the natural environment.
