It's a pleasant walk with wonderful views. The stones are quite polished (probably from the constant transit of donkeys), which makes them very slippery. It's important to use appropriate footwear and to walk slowly.

Just before you reach the church on your way to Oia there's a small fruit stand selling local fruits. Kind and smiley people. Make sure to pop over and refresh yourself before continuing your hike!

From the port of Skala, you can reach the village of Thira, 300 meters higher up, picturesquely nestled along the crater's rim. Thira is the island's main town. The town is often also called Fira. The 300 meters to the town center can be reached on foot via the famous staircase, with its hundreds of steps (587 steps). Those who find this too strenuous can reach this picturesque town either on donkey back or by cable car.

You can expect a mix of well-trodden paths, some rocky sections, and coastal trails. Many routes offer dramatic clifftop views where sheer cliffs plunge into the Aegean Sea. While some paths are relatively flat, others may involve gentle ascents and descents, especially when exploring the headland around the lighthouse or trails leading to viewpoints.
Yes, there are several easy circular routes perfect for families. For instance, the View of Fira and the caldera loop from Imerovigli is a great option, offering beautiful scenery without being too strenuous. Another family-friendly choice is the Fira (Santorini) – View of Fira and the caldera loop from Faros Akrotiriou-Oias.
The area is rich in natural beauty. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the Santorini volcano. Notable landmarks include the iconic Skaros Rock and the fascinating Volcanic Rock Formations of Santorini. The Akrotiri Lighthouse itself offers unparalleled panoramic vistas, especially at sunset.
Absolutely! Beyond the natural beauty, you can explore the historic Akrotiri Lighthouse, built in 1892. A short distance away, the Skaros Rock and Theoskepasti Chapel offer a glimpse into the region's past. For those interested in ancient history, the Akrotiri Archaeological Site is also nearby, showcasing well-preserved Bronze Age ruins.
Yes, parking is generally available in the villages and near popular starting points for trails, including around Akrotiri village and the lighthouse area. However, during peak season, spaces can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early.
Public transport, primarily buses, connects major villages and attractions on Santorini. You can typically take a bus to Akrotiri village, from where some family-friendly trails, including the scenic walk to the lighthouse, are accessible. Always check local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.
While many outdoor areas in Santorini are generally dog-friendly, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially in populated areas or near cliffs. Be mindful of other hikers and local wildlife. Always carry water for your pet, as shade and water sources can be limited on some trails.
The best time for family hikes is typically during the spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, making for comfortable hiking conditions, and the crowds are generally smaller than in the peak summer months. Summer can be very hot, so early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended if visiting then.
While many paths around the lighthouse and on the clifftops involve uneven terrain or steps, some sections within Akrotiri village or paved areas might be suitable for strollers. For dedicated stroller-friendly routes, look for wider, flatter paths, though these might be limited on the more scenic, natural trails.
Yes, Akrotiri village, located near many of the trails, offers a selection of tavernas and cafes where you can find refreshments and traditional Greek food. There are also often small kiosks or cafes near popular viewpoints, especially closer to the lighthouse, providing convenient spots to rest and refuel.
