It's a pleasant walk with wonderful views. The stones are quite polished (probably from the constant transit of donkeys), which makes them very slippery. It's important to use appropriate footwear and to walk slowly.

From the port of Skala, you can reach the village of Thira, 300 meters higher up, picturesquely nestled along the crater's rim. Thira is the island's main town. The town is often also called Fira. The 300 meters to the town center can be reached on foot via the famous staircase, with its hundreds of steps (587 steps). Those who find this too strenuous can reach this picturesque town either on donkey back or by cable car.
