Definitely go up onto the city wall! Access either at the underground car park in Amtsgerichtstraße or via the Klosterhof next to the Hl.Geist Church St. Anna in Karmeliterstraße. There you can walk along about 200m of the ramparts of the wall, built from the 13th to the 18th century, and look outside through the embrasures or gaze into the inner courtyards and feel a bit of the Middle Ages. A monument to touch and enter! By the way, the city wall is approx. 1.8km long and completely preserved except for the Lechtor! Tip: In the Klosterhof, next to the war memorial, there is also a rose bed with signs commemorating the "witches" of Schongau and around the fountain a small but fine herb garden with good signage about medicinal plants.

As early as 1331, Schongau received its own minting rights. The old mint building is integrated into the city wall, the large mint gate (formerly Schmid-Königs-Tor or Schmid-Kemlins-Tor) is not an old main entrance to the city, it was created for road traffic. The medieval city entrances, such as the Maxtor and the Marientor, were built as gate towers.

The Police Servant Tower, also called the Witches' Tower, is a resting unique, as the name suggests. Here is a passage to the panoramic view for "young-at-heart pensioners": Who recognizes the Zugspitze? Recommendation: Through the gate to the right is the so-called Sun Ditch on the city wall. It is worth looking at the Alpine chain (panorama sign with the names of the mountains), but also a walk along the wall, the old city moat. A brochure worth reading about this can be found in the City Museum (Christophstr.).

The Ballenhaus is the only free-standing building on Marienplatz. In the Middle Ages it served as a warehouse and transhipment house. Here the carters had to store their goods packed in bales and declare them. The naming of the building still bears witness to this today. The first floor of the Ballenhaus is also the city‘s old council chamber. (https://www.pfaffen-winkel.de/detail/id=62d6507d688edf9b88451eb5)
