The Waasmunster Bridge, which carries the N446 over the Durme River in Waasmunster, is an old bridge in urgent need of replacement. The work was scheduled to run from autumn 2025 to the end of 2026. However, by the time I passed by at the end of October 2025, it had not yet begun. Legal proceedings before the Council for Permit Disputes appear to be delaying the process. The current bridge has been in place since 1931, and although the superstructure was rebuilt in 1950 after being destroyed during World War II, it is no longer in good condition. The steel structure exhibits significant corrosion damage, which is affecting the bridge's supporting structure. The bridge deck itself is also in poor condition. As a result, a tonnage restriction (60 tons) is currently in effect on the N446. Furthermore, the bridge's substructure is nearing its end of life and is showing cracks. Besides the structural problems, road safety (the lack of separation between motorized traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians) is also a concern on the bridge. The situation under the bridge is also no longer aligned with current needs and insights. To reduce the risk of flooding, a bridge is needed that provides more space for the river and nature. The former monastery and Winter Chapel form the library's new home in the center of Hamme. The renovated building is full of charm. The position of the columns and pillars in the chapel determined the design; a new mezzanine adds an extra level. White shelving was chosen to emphasize the light in the space. Color accents come from the collection itself and the seating elements in shades of blue and green, the colors of the municipality of Hamme. The curved lines of the round shelving units for the informational books give the space a more informal atmosphere. (SBNL - Schulz Benelux BV)

You can request a guided tour of the church from Hamme Tourism (https://beleef.hamme.be/zien-doen/bezoeken-in-groep/bezoek-sint-pietersbandenkerk). During such a visit, you'll discover traces of a rich and sometimes turbulent past. The visit lasts 2.5 hours. Maximum 25 people.

A roadside chapel located on the street within the front yard of number 100. According to the Hamme land and map book (1772-1776), a small chapel was located a little further along at the intersection of Kaaldries and Evangeliestraat. The St. Anne's Chapel was supposedly rebuilt here to replace the demolished chapel. It was registered in the land registry at its current location in 1844. (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)
