The cable car is the oldest cable car in Northern Europe. The railway was built in 1928 by Adolf Bleichert & Co. from Leipzig-Gohlis and was a gift from the Norsk Hydro company to the residents of Rjukans. The residents of the valley had no sunlight during the winter months and could now take a trip to the sun by train.
