EDEN'S FIRST COURT OF PETTY SESSIONS WAS ESTABLISHED AT EDEN COURTHOUSE IN APRIL 1847, THE CLERK OF COURT BEING EDWARD FERRIS. MAGISTRATES APPOINTED THAT YEAR INCLUDED MR. (LATER SIR) OSWALD BRIERLY, WILLIAM WALKER AND JAMES WALKER. EDEN POLICE DISTRICT IN 1848 COVERED THE COUNTY OF AUCKLAND. A CHIEF CONSTABLE AND TWO CONSTABLES WERE STATIONED AT EDEN. MOUNTED POLICE WERE AT OUTPOSTS. THE EDEN WATCH HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1849 WITH LOOKOUT POINT FENCED OFF FROM THE WHARF AREA WATER POLICE WERE FIRST IN OPERATION IN 1854. MODERN DAY WATER POLICE WERE ESTABLISHED IN THE EARLY 1990'S AT EDEN. AS A POLICE HORSE PADDOCK.

An early owner of this store and residence was Matt Howard. During the early 1900s he advertised Motorists Benzine, oils, and motor accessories, new tyres all kinds of vulcanising done. Agents for motor cars. We stock everything. Later owners included, A. Vizard as well as Jack Drayson, who erected a workshop at the side, engaging in boat building and shopfitting. In the 1950s Len Hastie opened a grocery store. The modern motel units were added in 2004.

GREAT SOUTHERN HOTEL/HOTEL EDEN/GREAT SOUTHERN BUILT 1847. IT BECAME BARCLAY & TEAS GENERAL STORE AND POST OFFICE, BARCLAY BEING POSTMASTER. IN 1851-60 JOHN HOPKINS TOOK OUT A LICENCE FOR THE GREAT SOUTHERN HOTEL. OTHER LICENSEES WERE 1860-95 GEORGE AXAM, 1895-7 H.P. WELLINGS, 1897-1906 SABINA PIKE, 1907-26 SAM WILTON, 1926-35 W.N. STEELE RUDD. FROM 1935 TO LATE 1960'S V.T. WELSH. VINCENT THOMAS WELSH CHANGED THE NAME TO HOTEL EDEN. OVER THE YEARS BALCONIES HAD BEEN ADDED AND ACCOMMODATION FOR GUESTS. THE NAME WAS ALSO CHANGED TO THE GREAT SOUTHERN INN.
