One of the most impressive examples of a charcoal fired blast furnace in Britain, the Duddon Iron Furnace hints at the regions former industrial glory. Established in 1736, the pig iron that was cast here was sent as far afield as Bristol for use in the ship building industry. It closed in 1866 and became derelict. Today it is in the care of the Lake District National Park authority.
