Bremetennacum was a Roman cavalry fort that guarded a crossing on the River Ribble. Established sometime around 70 AD, it was one of many such defensive forts across northern Britannia. It is likely there were dwellings next to the fort on the site of what is today the village of Ribchester, including a bath house and at least two temples. The Ribchester Roman Museum is a great place to find out more.

On the lazily meandering River Ribble, the pretty village of Ribchester is steeped in history. Once the site of the Roman cavalry fort of Bremetennacum, there is evidence of human activity here dating back to Neolithic times. The Ribchester Roman Museum provides insight into Roman life in the region. There are a number of footpaths to explore in the surrounding countryside, while the village is an important stop on the Ribble Way long-distance trail. You can seek accommodation at the Ribchester Arms or the Riverside Barn B&B. The Black Bull also serves food in the heart of the village.

Flowing from the Yorkshire Dales towards the sea, the River Ribble passes through beautiful countryside. Archaeological findings suggest that people have lived along the river for thousands of years since Neolithic and Saxon times. 75 miles (121 km) in length, the river has the third largest tide in England. Its tides reach up to 4 knots and 8 meters (26 feet) during Spring times.
