On the lazily meandering River Ribble, the pretty village of Ribchester is steeped in history. Once the site of the Roman cavalry fort of Bremetennacum, there is evidence of human activity here dating back to Neolithic times. The Ribchester Roman Museum provides insight into Roman life in the region.
There are a number of footpaths to explore in the surrounding countryside, while the village is an important stop on the Ribble Way long-distance trail. You can seek accommodation at the Ribchester Arms or the Riverside Barn B&B. The Black Bull also serves food in the heart of the village.
